Our client (a FTSE 250 company) has an expanding and challenging portfolio of rail projects, covering a wide variety of signalling renewals and a diverse range of other network enhancements for their primary Client, Network Rail.
We are currently looking for a Signalling Design Manager to be based in either London or the North West for an initial 6 month contract with the expectation that it may well roll on for much longer given the current workload and forthcoming assignments.
You will ideally hold the IRSE’s Design Manager licence (1.1.145), or the Principles Designer (1.1.550) or Verifier (1.1.160) licences with relevant supervisory or management experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the team’s production of designs, specifications, reports and working drawings within agreed timescales and performance parameters
- Responsible for the design delivery of a project to client expectations
- Implement the requirements of the Management System, Core-Assurance Case and Railway Safety Case
- Assist in determining engineering policy and deal with engineering and contractual matters with professional integrity
Required skills
- IRSE’s Design Manager licence (1.1.145), or the Principles Designer (1.1.550) or Verifier (1.1.160) licences with relevant supervisory or management experience. [Lapsed licences will be considered with relevant experience]
- UK Signalling Principle Design Engineer skills including knowledge of standards, procedures, CAD etc
- Experience of bidding, planning and resource management
- Experience or capability of undertaking RDE duties
- Proven ability to check signalling designs
- Preference is likely to be given to IRSE Workplace Assessors, or those working towards assessor qualification.

Key Requirements:
- Allocate roles, responsibilities and production activities within the design team.
- Assist the signalling design management with planning, project programmes and associated time and resource estimates and skills requirements
- Implementation of the design scope, certifying that the designers working under you clearly understand the project requirements
- Report to the team leader, project manager, but ultimately to the group leader
- Assistance with the risk assessments and analysis using the appropriate tools and methods
- Thorough understanding of signalling principles backed by technical qualifications
- Lead a number of assistant Signalling Designers and junior technical staff with signalling design input to smaller signalling and railway projects as well as working as a part of a team comprising designers, engineers and technicians
- Ability to work under normal supervision through most of the work
- Ensure that satisfactory resolutions of technical queries and project anomalies are achieved
Key Skills:
- IRSE license Signalling Principles Design Category (1.1.550) and ideally Signalling Design Verifier (1.1.160)
- Associate member of the IRSE and an Incorporated Engineer
- Good experience on signalling construction methods and instillation
- Hands-on experience of the production of outlined and detailed signalling designs and calculations. Other railway design experience within the rail industry is necessary
- Underpinning of signalling design principles, standards, components and fabrication methods to a good standard
- Knowledge of RRI, SSI or Mechanical systems ideally all three
- Updating of designs and records.
- IT literacy, proficient in use of CAD systems
- Client and third party liaison
